The United Nations says that there is a growing amount of evidence that Russia committed war crimes as a result of actions that they have carried out during their 'special operation' or invasion of Ukraine since the war started on February 24th, 2022.

On April 22nd, Ravina Shamdasani, a spokeswoman for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the "Russian armed forces have indiscriminately shelled and bombed populated areas, killing civilians and wrecking hospitals, schools, and other civilian infrastructure, actions that may amount to war crimes".

A United Nations mission in the town of Bucha, Ukraine says that they have documented 50 civilians that had been killed in that city and said that they documented those that had allegedly been killed by summary execution.

Russia however, has denied that any civilians were killed in Bucha, and accused Ukraine of staging the atrocities.

Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated on April 22nd that "over these eight weeks [since the beginning of the war], international humanitarian law has not merely been ignored but seemingly tossed aside".

She went on to say that the UN mission "has also documented what appears to be the use of weapons with indiscriminate effects, causing civilian casualties and damage to civilian objects, by Ukrainian armed forces in the east of the country".

The UN mission stated that between February 24th to April 20th it had documented 2,345 civilians that had been killed, as well as 2,919 that had been wounded.

"We know the actual numbers are going to be much higher, as the horrors inflicted in areas of intense fighting, such as Mariupol, come to light," Bachelet stated.
