Ukraine Cuts Diplomatic Ties With North Korea

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry says that they have cut ties with North Korea as a result of North Korea recognizing the "independence" of Ukrainian territories under the occupation of Russia.

The statement put out by Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said that they strongly condemn the decision by North Korea to recognize the "so-called "independence" of the territories temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine".

"We consider this decision as an attempt by Pyongyang to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, a gross violation of the Constitution of Ukraine, the UN Charter, and the fundamental norms and principles of the international law," it added.

The DPR, or Donetsk People's Republic pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk, Ukraine had stated that it was in discussions with Pyongyang regarding North Korea's recognition of its independence.

After the North Korean embassy in Moscow reportedly confirmed their recognition of the DPR and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR), the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announced that they were cutting diplomatic relations with North Korea.

"In response to such an unfriendly act, Ukraine announces the severance of diplomatic relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea [North Korea's official name]".
