Nancy Pelosi has planned a trip to Taiwan, the first time in 20 years that a Speaker of the House has traveled to the island. The last Speaker of the House visit was in 1997. China has warned of 'strong measures' if Pelosi visits.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian stated, "If the United States insists on having its own way, China will take strong measures in response to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. All possible consequences that arise from this will completely be borne by the U.S. side".
Lijian said that China is against all official contact between the United States and Taiwan.
A Chinese embassy spokesperson said, "In the past few days, Chinese Ambassador Qin Gang and the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. have lodged stern representations with the U.S. Congress and government on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's reported visit to Taiwan, and stated China's solemn position, urging the U.S. side to abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations in the three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques, and to cancel Speaker Pelosi's plan to visit Taiwan".
Pelosi however has since tested positive for COVID-19, which has reportedly caused her planned trip to Taiwan to be postponed. Pelosi's deputy chief of staff Drew Hammill put out a statement saying, "After testing negative this week, Speaker Pelosi received a positive test result for COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic".
Hammill said that a planned congressional delegation to Asia that was to be led by Pelosi over the two-week congressional break, "will be postponed to a later date."
