Germany Gas Crisis June 2022

Germany is considering rationing natural gas after Russia gas cuts have begun to seriously impact Germany’s supply.

Berlin triggered the second of its three-step plan to deal with gas shortages after the Kremlin-controlled energy giant Gazprom, the country’s biggest gas exporter, throttled delivery via the Nordstream pipeline by around 60% last week. Germany’s gas reserves are at 58% capacity, and the government now expects a gas shortage by December if supplies don’t pick up, Economy Minister Robert Habeck said.

Germany is just one step away from rationing it’s gas supplies to its citizens. Many members of the EU have had their supply lowered this month by Russia, and it’s effects are being felt as the countries plan ahead for the cold winter months to come.

“Russia's state gas company Gazprom slashed flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany by 60% last week, blaming the move on the West's decision to withhold vital turbines because of sanctions.”

“According to [German economics minister Robert] Habeck, Germany has 58% more gas available in storage compared to last year, but that could deplete rapidly as supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline are currently down to 40% of the total capacity.”

Habeck has asked that Germany’s citizens use gas sparingly, noting that there is a reserve of gas saved that may need to be tapped into if the current amount is depleted. Rising gas prices are also putting a burden on this increasingly stressed situation.
