U.S. Central Command has put out a release saying that they carried out a "UAS strike" outside of Jindayris, in northwest Syria that targeted "two senior ISIS officials" on July 12th, 2022.
The strike killed Maher al-Agal, who was one of the top five ISIS leaders and leader of ISIS in Syria, and 'seriously injured' a senior ISIS official who was "closely associated" with Maher according to the statement.
The CENTCOM statement said that "extensive planning" went into the operation in order to ensure its "successful execution" and that a review of the strike indicated that there had been no civilian casualties.
The statement also said that Al-Agal was responsible for "aggressively pursuing the development of ISIS networks outside of Iraq and Syria".
U.S. Central Command spokesperson Colonel Joe Buccino said, "This strike reaffirms CENTCOM's steadfast commitment to the region and the enduring defeat of ISIS. The removal of these ISIS leaders will disrupt the terrorist organization's ability to further plot and carry out global attacks."
"ISIS continues to represent a threat to the U.S. and partners in the region," he added. "CENTCOM maintains a sufficient and sustainable presence in the region and will continue to counter threats against regional security."
