KHARKIV - Maintaining a high momentum, the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian forces continues as they liberate one village after another, pushing Russia back to its border, and leaving everyone in a state of shock and awe.
Independent verification of military claims in this war is still hard to come by. However, Russia has acknowledged the developments, claiming it was having to regroup.
In 5 days, Ukraine has recaptured more territory than Russia has since April.
According to the Associated Press, After Sunday's attack on infrastructure, mainly power stations, the electrical grid was knocked offline at many locations in Ukraine.
As of now, around 80% of electricity and water utility supplies have been restored to the Kharkiv region.
An excited mayor in Kharkiv wrote on Telegram that the Ukrainian military were heroes.
The recent turn of events and a key reversal of initiative have been supported by international observers who warn of hard times for the Russian military personnel, occupying parts of Ukraine. Unlike the beginning of the "special military operation", these gains stand in sharp contrast to the earlier days of it when Russian troops were knocking on Kyiv's front door.
News from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has said that its troops have liberated more than 20 settlements within the last 24 hours.
An excited and Defiant Zelensky also expressed his mood on social media in a bold statement after the news was released:
As the news comes in of the Ukrainian victory, the mood turns sullen as reports of casualties continue to come in. At least 4 civilians were lost and 11 wounded in Russian attacks in other regions of the country. A total of 5,767 civilians have been lost so far in Russia's "special military operation," according to the U.N. Human Rights Office.
In an effort to contain its losses, Russia began firing on Ukrainian infrastructure, which was immediately met with international criticism regarding the attacks centering on civilians. A massive fire at a power station was ignited in Kharkiv by a missile bombardment that has claimed yet more innocent lives.
The Russian military continues to hit the town of Nikopol which is across the Dnieper river from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP), which leaves the possibility of a nuclear disaster open there. However, the power plant was completely shut down over the weekend lowering nuclear risks, but the potential remains as nuclear materials are still present.
The British Defense Ministry went on to say that even in the Kherson region, Russia is having struggles bringing its military across the Dnipro River to stop the Ukrainian offensives.
Though the war is more than likely going to stretch into 2023, the Washington Institute for the Study of War is now saying that Russia lacks the reserves needed to boost its defenses in Ukraine, and Ukrainian forces have turned the direction of the tide in their favor by utilizing western weapons and training offered by western countries. Going forward, Kyiv will more than likely by the one choosing the location and nature of fighting from now on.
