WASHINGTON D.C. - The Capitol Police has reported on a car ramming a vehicle barricade on East Capitol St., exited his vehicle and began firing a weapon as the wrecked vehicle burst into flames, then committed suicide, just after 4 am local time.
United States Capitol Police have reported that officers responded to the gunfire, they approached the man driving the vehicle, and the man turned the gun on himself, committing suicide. No weapons were fired by U.S. Capitol Police.
There were no other injuries or fatalities reported, and at this time, no members of congress were targeted in the event, as congress was on recess.
The current investigation is now being handled by the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department, according to the United States Capitol Police website, uscp.gov in the official press release.
The associated press reported that this attack is a reminder of one which previously claimed the life of a veteran Capitol Police Officer, of 18 years, in 2021.
A motive has not been established, and the man's identity has yet to be released, but investigators were looking into the man's background though no information was disclosed.
