A bit of history. Taiwan rose up from the ashes of the former government that was once the Republic of China which fled China after the communist takeover in 1949. China then became known as the People's Republic of China.

The Taiwan Strait has been a region of high tension since, and many nations utilize the straight as international waters, which has been angering China ever since.

"The Taiwan Strait is an international waterway, meaning the Taiwan Strait is an area where high seas freedoms, including freedom of navigation and overflight, are guaranteed under international law." -Ned Price, U.S. State Department spokesman

He later went on to say that China has become very aggressive regarding Taiwan, and the U.S. would continue it's flights and voyages through the strait as international law states is acceptable.
