GAZA - Israel announced the start of a military operation in the Gaza strip on August 5th with multiple strikes targeting the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist group, with officials stating their actions were unavoidable after the PIJ refused to back down from its intent to attack Israel. In response, the PIJ sent swarms of rockets into Israel. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) hit a total of 6 sites within Gaza with armed drones and fighter jets in an operation called 'Operation Breaking Dawn.' One of the strikes hit a senior commander of the PIJ. Also, the commander who was preparing for future attacks on Israel with several squads of soldiers and an anti-tank guided missile array was targeted by the IDF. There were approximately 10-20 souls lost by the IDF attacks on Gaza, including a 5-year-old girl, and 55 were wounded. The second wave of airstrikes was also initiated a few hours later. A warning was issued by Gantz earlier in the day stating that Israel would take action if the PIJ did not stop its preparations for an attack that it had been threatening since Tuesday by the PIJ in response to the arrest of the PIJ's leader of the West Bank, causing lockdowns and road closures near the border. As the sun went down and night set in, the retaliation came in the form of rockets being fired into the central and southern areas. Emergency broadcasts displayed warnings of missiles being destroyed by defense systems and sirens were blaring throughout. In Tel Aviv, people were saying they could explosions, but could not hear the sirens from that far of a distance. The Islamic Jihad claimed it had fired over 100 Rockets into Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv. There were no reports of casualties in these targeted areas, according to the Israeli ambulance service. According to Israeli authorities, the air strikes took the life of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Commander Tayseer al-Jaabari and approximately 15 militants, but the IDF has yet to give the final count of casualties. There have been mixed responses from the world in regards to Israel's attack on Gaza. Allies of Israel defended the strikes and those supporting the groups and people of Gaza, condemned them, though there was a common theme: de-escalation, restraint, and common sense. The United States' John Kirby strongly stood beside Israel, and stated that Israel had every right to defend itself. Turkey on the other hand strongly condemned the air raids on Gaza and stated that it was unacceptable that civilians, especially children, had to lose their lives. Qatar, who has spent massive amounts of money rebuilding the Gaza Strip, expressed strong condemnation of the attack and called on the international community to urge Israel to stop the occupation and repeated attacks on civilians. This exchange was the 1st since the 11-day war in May 2021 between Israel and Hamas, which killed 250 in Gaza and 13 in Israel and left the Gaza economy in shambles. Sources The Times of Israel | Reuters | Al Jazeera Photo Accreditation Photo: Map of Israel, Mor | Self-published work | PD-self, via Wikimedia Commons
