MOSCOW - On Russian state-run news channel Rossiya 24, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the West of violating international law and trying to impose a 'rules-based' global order. "Our special military operation is meant to put an end to the unabashed expansion [of NATO] and the unabashed drive towards full domination by the U.S. and its Western subjects on the world stage" he claimed.
"This domination is built on gross violations of international law and under some rules, which they are now hyping so much and which they make up on a case-by-case basis" Lavrov added.
Although this is the latest justification given by Russia for their war on Ukraine, it is not the first since the invasion of the country began. Lavrov stated last month that "the goal of Russia's special military operation is to stop any war that could take place on Ukrainian territory or that could start from there".
Russia has also stated that they were seeking the 'denazification' of the country and blamed Ukraine for the alleged genocide of the Russian-speaking population in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. This, however, lacked evidence.
In another justification for the invasion, Russia said that it wanted to prevent Ukraine from joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), after which the Ukrainian President stated that Ukraine no longer wishes to join the alliance.
In yet another justification for the war, Russia alleged that Ukraine was seeking to build a nuclear 'dirty bomb' and that Russia was trying to prevent that from happening by taking over the nuclear sites. This claim also lacked evidence.
