Putin References Peter The Great Conquering "What Always Belonged To Us"

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke in a video speaking to a group of younger entrepreneurs saying "During the war with Sweden, Peter the Great didn't conquer anything, he took back what had always belonged to us, even though all of Europe recognized it as Sweden's. It seems now it's our turn to get our lands back [smiling]".

Putin referenced Peter the Great again and said "When he founded the new capital, none of the European countries recognized this territory as part of Russia; everyone recognized it as part of Sweden. However, from time immemorial, the Slavs lived there along with the Finno-Ugric peoples, and this territory was under Russia's control. The same is true of the western direction, Narva and his first campaigns. Why would he go there? He was returning and reinforcing, that is what he was doing".

Attached is a map of the Russian Empire and all land held by Russia in 1914.
