North Korea Fires 8 Short-Range Ballistic Missiles Toward East Sea

The Japanese Coast Guard and South Korean military have both reported that North Korea has launched at least one ballistic missile toward the East Sea off of its east coast at around 09:08 a.m. to 09:43 a.m. KST.

South Korean news Yonhap is reporting that North Korea has fired 8 short-range ballistic missiles after Washington completed joint drills with South Korea which involved a U.S. aircraft carrier citing the South Korean military.

VOA Seoul bureau chief William Gallo also reported that "The eight North Korean short-range ballistic missiles were launched between 9:08-9:43 am this morning, South Korea's military says".

The South Korean National Security Council is set to convene in response to the North Korean missile launches, according to Yonhap.

The missiles reached an altitude of between 16 and 56 miles and flew a distance of between 68 and 416 miles and it is believed that they reached between three to six times the speed of sound.

The South Korean military stated that they were "maintaining a full readiness posture" after consulting with U.S. forces, according to the Joint Chiefs.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command released a statement that said that they were aware of the missile launches but said that they do "not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory, or to our allies".

"The U.S. commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea and Japan remains ironclad," the statement said.
