New Sanctions on the DPRK have been vetoed by Russia & China

On Thursday, the UN Security Council met to decide on a new resolution involving sanctions on North Korea, led by the United States. The sanctions were directed towards over North Korea's recent missile launches, which are banned by the UN Security Council, and North Korea's precarious posturing. The sanctions would include banning oil and tobacco exports to North Korea. Also listed in the resolution was a potential blacklist request for a hacking group that is deeply tied to North Korea, called the Lazarus hacking group.

China and Russia vetoed the motion, while the 13 other nations voted unanimously with the U.S. This is the first time there has been division in the UN Security Council since 2006.

"The world faces a clear and present danger from the DPRK... ...Council restraint and silence has not eliminated or even reduced the threat. If anything, the DPRK has been emboldened." -Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Ambassador to the UN
