Maritime Traffic Delays & Global Supply Chain Disruptions: China

There are massive amounts of cargo ships reportedly stacking up outside ports in China, due to the recent COVID-19 lockdown. Reported by Times Now as of April 19th, there were approximately 470 ships waiting to get into Shanghai with more on the way.

Just as global shipping had begun to recover from previous lockdowns and panic over the pandemic, another lockdown ensued.

The authorities in China have allowed factories to resume, but now the bottleneck is getting workers back into the plants, whom most are stuck in quarantine at home. Factories also lack components which is causing a problem to build finished goods.

According to Josh Brazil, director of Supply Chain Data Insights at Project44, "With the manufacturing industry being shuttered and truckers unable to travel quickly, exports have been reduced, and shipment delays have increased.... Delays will continue into the summer months as factories struggle to return to normal operations in Shanghai."

The lockdown in Shanghai continues and 8 million residents are still prevented from leaving their residents. The Restrictions are no longer localized to Shanghai and have now entered other cities, such as Beijing and an additional 26 cities under full or partial lockdowns.
