Shireen Abu Akleh, a well-known journalist for Al-Jazeera news was shot in the head during an Israeli counterterror raid in the West Bank by a live bullet. The Al-Jazeera broadcaster and the two reporters that were with her at the time have blamed Israeli forces for the death

Initially, the Israeli military put out the suggestion that she had been killed by stray gunfire from the Palestinians, but Israel's defense ministry Benny Gantz, stated on Wednesday that "we are trying to figure out exactly what happened. I don't have final conclusions".

He also said that he requested that the Palestinian medical team that carried out the autopsy to give them the bullet that was extracted from the body of the journalist. The Palestinian forensics institute head, Rayan al-Ali had stated that the bullet was deformed and that it could not be determined who fired it.

Abu Akleh had been shot while reporting on the Israeli military raid outside of the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

Ganz said "I am very sorry for what happened. Currently, we do not know what was the direct cause of Shireen’s death. We are very decisive to have a full-scale investigation ... and we hope to get Palestinian cooperation on this issue".
