The Iraqi military said that the drone had not obtained an official permit to fly within the area. No damage to property or casualties have been reported as a result of the incident.

A defense official spoke to a BBC reporter and said that the drone flew over the airport "putting innocent Iraqi lives at risk and [it] could [have] hit commercial flights".
