Bank Protests Thwarted in China with Red Health Codes

Currently going on in China, a freeze on all funds in banks, preventing people from withdrawing their money. A protest had been planned by bank customers, but the protest has been thwarted due to an unusual tactic from China.

The protest was scheduled in the central province of Henan, where customers were going to travel to and engage in protest of the banks. The freeze has been going on for 2 months and is preventing customers from withdrawing upwards of $178 million in deposits. Companies are unable to pay workers, and personal individuals are not able to access their savings.

In a scheme to block the protests, rights groups have feared that China could use the COVID infrastructure to prevent the protesting masses. All transportation is done through an app, and if the app is shaded in red, citizens lose their right to mass transit across the country.

Individuals are now being asked in China, to register all travel plans. One such individual who registered their plan to travel to Henan Province, received a red code on their travel pass app. It could not be determined if the red code was directly interlinked with the travel plans set for this individual into the Henan province.

Other individuals who did make it to the Henan province, immediately received a red code on their app after they scanned the city health codes.
