As China Holds Targeted Military Operations, Pelosi Pledges Solidarity With Taiwan

TAIPEI - China has vehemently repudiated the visit of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the self-ruled island of Taiwan, and in response, will launch what it terms targeted military operations, encircling Taiwan in response.

The last visit by a United States diplomat, from one of the top 3 highest-held political offices, occurred 25 years ago with the visit of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1997, following the last China-Taiwan Crisis in the late 90s, according to Reuters.

China has repeatedly accused the United States of meddling in foreign affairs, and this visit has been termed as a direct violation of its One-China Policy and Chinese sovereignty. Condemnation from other international players has also come from countries such as Russia, Syria, Iran, and Venezuela, which are countries that have come under some form of US lead sanctions, the most recent of which is Russia with its invasion of Ukraine.

The visit was 1 stop on the itinerary in a series of stops in the Asia-Pacific, in an attempt to solidify ties with Asian countries that see China as a potential aggressor.

When Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taipei, she was received with open arms and on the red carpet, greeted by a welcoming delegation and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.

According to the Daily Wire, Nancy said this upon her arrival:

"Our Congressional delegation's visit to Taiwan honors America's unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan's vibrant Democracy… Our visit is part of our broader trip to the Indo-Pacific including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan, and focused on mutual security, economic partnership, and democratic governance."

Nancy Pelosi, in her speech, pointed out that in regards to the Taiwan Relations Act H.R.2479 Congress (1979-1980), the United States has a promise to defend Taiwan by quoting the text itself:

"consider any effort to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means … a threat to the peace and security of the Western Pacific area and of grave concern to the United States."

The countries mentioned in her quote are independent nations in the Asia-Pacific region that have come together in unique solidarity in opposition to China's dominance in the region and also are seeking an independent Taiwan.

Reuters also reported that White House national security spokesman John Kirby stated that the United States will not be intimidated by threats and rhetoric from China, after Pelosi's arrival. Though the United States does not have an official diplomatic relationship with Taiwan, it is still bound by American law to provide support and the means to defend itself.

China's direct response from the Eastern Theatre Command, Shi Yi stated this:

"This action is targeted at the US's shocking recent major escalation on the Taiwan issue, and serves as a serious warning to Taiwanese independence forces or those seeking independence."

In response, China's targeted military operation, which is set to begin at 00:00 on August 4th, is marked out in 6 strategic locations, encircling the island. The stated operation will last through August 7th, and maps, which have been shared on several social media outlets, show the boundaries coming within feet of the Taiwanese shoreline.

China's military has been on high alert since before Pelosi's visit, moving massive amounts of hardware to the Fujian province, directly across the Taiwan Strait. The operation will be 2 parts, consisting of air and sea personnel and equipment. The operation will be long-range live-fire along with missile tests in the sea, east of Taiwan, all controlled by the PLA Eastern Theatre Command, according to News Nation.
